MIT’s LLSC is Aiming to Make Data Centers Less of a Pandora’s Box

Sayantani Sanyal

MIT is advancing data centers and it is only a matter of time before AI research will be more advanced

The emergence of new technologies and critical applications is causing a paradigm shift in global industries. Businesses across the world are constantly adapting to the ever-growing landscape of tech, one such innovation is witnessing a significant increase in adoption, i.e., data centers. The emergence of data centers is a result of the rising amounts of data that are generated by millions of internet users. Data processing centers or data centers are not a new concept, except experts think that the existing data centers need new modifications via advanced technologies to efficiently handle data in the coming future. To further this process, MIT has taken it upon itself to produce the best solutions and arm data centers to prepare them for the future.

Back in 2019, the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Supercomputing Center (LLSC) revealed its TX-GAIA supercomputer which to aimed to provide the MIT community with a new resource for applying artificial intelligence to their research. AI researchers at the university have decided to take it a step further. Their goal is to empower computer scientists and data center operators to better understand avenues for data center optimization, an important task as processing needs to grow. They see the potential for leveraging AI in the data center itself, by using the data to develop models for predicting failure points, job scheduling, and enhancing energy efficiency.

Reports narrating the dataset and potential applications have been widely accepted by several research venues, including the IEEE International Symposium on High-Performance Computer Architecture, IEEE High-Performance and Embedded Computing Conference, and International Conference for High-Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis, and several others. MIT is one of the most powerful and advanced universities in the world, and its headway towards making data centres better is quite well-received, nevertheless, there are also many challenges that the researchers have to face to make these deployments worthwhile.
