A new report revealed that augmenting the number of cloud services increases the attack surface for organizations. And multi cloud users more likely to experience security breaches. The recently published report from Nominet found that 69 percent of multi cloud businesses experienced between 11-30 breaches, compared to 19 percent of a single cloud, and 13 percent of hybrid cloud businesses.

Most of the enterprise compute today are rapidly shifting toward the cloud environment, though reports show varying rates of cloud computing adoption based on the industry. Additionally, many security vendors increasingly offer only a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) version of their products that require organizations to rely on cloud computing for security.

However, Nominet report noted that 92 percent of organizations are adopting cloud-based security solutions. On the other hand, 88 percent of respondents indicate that their organization is currently engaged in, or is planning to adopt cloud and software-as-a-service solutions, while 71 percent already have an active deployment. Also, 60 percent of businesses adopted infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), while other service models have modestly lower adoption, including platform-as-a-service (PaaS) at 48 percent, and business-platform-as-a-service (BPaaS) at 30 percent.

Nearly half of the organizations – 48 percent – is running a multi cloud environment, compared with 24 percent of hybrid cloud deployment, the report said. Furthermore, over half, 55 percent, of respondents working in healthcare, financial services with 47 percent and pharmaceuticals with 46 percent is being extremely concerned about the security risks posed by cloud computing.

The report further divulges that 71 percent of respondents were either somewhat very or extremely concerned, although, participants from the US with 21 percent were almost twice, compared with 13 percent from the UK to be extremely concerned. Recognizing the potentially quite high fines related to GDPR noncompliance, the variation between the UK and US is interesting, though US firms are still subject to GDPR compliance, regardless of it being an EU policy.

Nominet surveyed nearly 300 CISOs, CIOs, CTOs and other security professionals in the UK and US to find out the factors playing an essential role in the shift to cloud technologies, the extent of which cloud concerns have been overcome, and the role they see cloud taking in the security solutions of the future.

Previously, cloud computing has been seen as less than on-premise systems as it requires a relinquishment of control that many organizations were not comfortable with. But now public attitude seems to have changed, as the majority of businesses leveraging cloud security solutions. And today this technology has been gaining rapid traction and becoming the front-runner in order to deliver enterprise infrastructure, software, and platforms.
