Universities in Japan are currently enforcing policies on students using OpenAI's ChatGPT. The Independent claims that Tokyo's Sophia University has outlawed students using the chatbot to compose projects like essays, reports, and theses.
The university stated in updated policies posted on its official website on March 27 that "the use of text, program source code, calculation results generated by ChatGPT and other AI chatbots are not permitted on any assignments such as reaction papers, reports, essays, and thesis, as the student does not create them."

It continued, "Strict measures will be applied by the University's Disciplinary Rules on Misconduct if the use is proven by detection instruments, etc.
The University of Tokyo also amended its criteria for using AI chatbots and posted them on its internal website on April 3. The paper stated that "reports must be created by students themselves and cannot be created solely with the help of AI."
Nagahiro Minato, president of Kyoto University, stated that documents produced by artificial intelligence had numerous issues and flaws.
