Hong Kong University of Science and Technology HKUST has officially announced the plan to introduce an online-based metaverse campus by leveraging virtual reality and other cutting-edge technologies. This new and modern metaverse campus will be known as MetaHKUST offering a mixed virtual reality classroom for all enrolled students across the world. The MetaHKUST from Hong Kong University is set to host the launch of the new campus in Guangzhou. Hong Kong University has considered the metaverse to be an ideal place for being a series of self-sustaining, perpetual, and concurrent 3D virtual spaces with cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, blockchain, and many more. The group in Hong Kong University consists of over ten years of expertise from Prof. Pan HUI, an affiliate Professor of Emerging Interdisciplinary Area and Computer Science and Engineering as well as HKUST's Chair Professor of Computational Media and Arts Thrust.
The MetaHKUST project will commence in September with the grand opening of the new campus as well. The metaverse campus is set to empower meaningful strides and add new dimensions to benefit faculties and students of Hong Kong University with advanced technologies such as virtual reality and more. MetaHKUST will offer digital twins of actual facilities while migrating more virtual objects to both physical campuses in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Students can wear virtual reality headsets to have a clear understanding of subjects through 3D visualization of data and information superimposed on objects in real environments.

HKUST is set to reap the benefits of the metaverse in this newly created metaverse campus to offer its students more than just a traditional classroom setup. The metaverse campus has decided to install a series of sensors, XR classrooms, visualization tools, and HD cameras to provide relevant information to the metaverse ecosystem. The university has also announced to offer introductory engineering lessons in the metaverse later in 2022. That being said, MetaHKUST is ready to offer an immersive study experience to students across the world as well as a holistic platform to Hong Kong University for creating, innovating, and connecting efficiently and effectively.
