One of the most critical steps in ascertaining how AI should be in the future is the United Kingdom’s anticipated plea for companies to implement strict AI safety standards at the AI Seoul Summit 2022. This event, to be co-hosted on 21-22 May 2022 by the United Kingdom and the Republic of Korea, will enable more world leaders to get involved in the critical conversation on AI governance.

AI Seoul Summit will strive to continue to pursue the mission and vision for the AI Safety Summit to uphold the use of AI for safety further, and the first AI Safety Summit in November 2023 at Bletchley Park accomplished this. The governments of the AI technologies and solutions possible future application areas in various countries across the continent will be invited; leading companies, academia, and civil society, as well as the governments in the development of different AI technologies and solutions, will be encouraged to promote debates around the implementation of various AI technologies across multiple security sectors. The decision made by the UK follows the overarching focus on the urgent requirement for a broader supranational AI policy, which focuses on a multipronged approach to regulating technology through various industries.

The Normative Structure of Three Governance Strategies for AI

The UK's agenda for the Seoul summit revolves around three critical priorities: Three fundamental priorities are the key issues that the UK will be trying to put high up on the agenda.

1. Safety: Japan: Multi-Year Research Roadmap for Responsible AI Development.

2. Innovation: Applying Societal Expectations on Innovation Within the Context of Building Ethical AI.

3. Inclusivity: It seeks an equitable distribution of opportunities and advantages related to the application of AI among different population groups and in different places in the world.

These priorities have shown that the UK is willing to invest in a tower that will nurture the suitable development of AI technology.

Virtual and In-Person Engagements

The summit will kick off with a virtual leaders' session co-chaired by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Republic of Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol. A select group of global industry leaders will provide updates on their progress in fulfilling the commitments made at the Bletchley Park summit, particularly regarding model safety.

The following day will feature an in-person meeting of Digital Ministers, co-hosted by UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan and Korean Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-Ho. The discussions will focus on strengthening AI safety, addressing emerging risks from frontier AI models, and developing the International AI Safety Report.

The Road Ahead

The more countries in the discussions, the more it will be able to contribute considerably to building an effective and balanced AI governance framework on which global society might rely in the future.

However, the AI Seoul Summit is not only an event attended by the brightest minds about AI Safety Standards; it also proves that the UK succeeds in steering AI development in such an intricate area as the global information environment. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to promote the most effective safety standards of AI in all places and ensure the optimal use of AI for human and commercial benefit. The entire world is waiting and watching; it is expected that the proactive calling for action formulated by the UK at the Seoul Summit will pave the way for a new era of responsibly developing AI technology.
