NASA and Generative AI: A New Paradigm in the Making

As NASA and generative AI collaboration takes space tech to a new realm, researchers hope for an extra-terrestrial shift

There are at least some times in our lives when we think doing something is not rocket science. But now it seems even rocket science will qualify for this quip!! NASA, the American space agency, has successfully developed spacecraft and mission hardware with the help of generative AI. They are lightweight and tolerate higher structural loads. NASA and generative AI collab opens an opportunity for a shift in the way we look at space technology. Usually, it takes a few months for engineers to design the parts of a spacecraft. NASA has released AI-designed specialized parts called Evolved Structures that are being implemented in equipment including astrophysics balloon observatories, Earth atmosphere scanners, and planetary instruments. Ryan McClelland, the research engineer at NASA a titanium scaffold for EXCITE telescope that requires materials having different thermal expansion properties, and hence the interface between the materials should have the least stress.

The researchers view AI as design consultants which can take textual prompts to deliver the desired product. This is essentially telling a smart 3D machine to make a part that fits the way it is required. For example, the design specialist can start by telling the AI application where the parts connect and which spaces have to be left empty. The AI software then connects the dots to produce a complex structure design within an hour or two. Emphasizing the importance of human involvement McClelland says, monitoring ensures the design doesn't fall for algorithmic discrepancies. NASA scientists opine, combining AI, and 3D printing can advance In-space Services, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM) capabilities. ISAM National Strategy and ISAM Implementation Plan is the key element of US space infrastructure development. If taken forward, AI-assisted designs by NASA can facilitate in-situ production on Moon or Mars!!
