In his first public remarks since an open letter sparked a debate about the technology's future, Microsoft's Bill Gates told Reuters that calls to halt AI development will not "solve the challenges" that lie ahead.

His interview with Reuters comes after an open letter that was published last week and co-signed by Elon Musk and more than 1,000 experts in artificial intelligence called for an immediate halt to the development of systems that are "more powerful" than OpenAI's new GPT-4, which can hold a human-like conversation, compose songs, and summarize long documents.
The letter stated that the potential benefits and risks to society must be evaluated by the experts, which included Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.
Gates stated on Monday, "I don't think asking one particular group to pause solves the challenges."
"These things have huge advantages; what we need to do is find the tricky areas."
Microsoft has tried to dominate looks through extravagant interests in ChatGPT proprietor OpenAI.
While he is currently working full-time for the philanthropic Bill Gates and Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates has been a strong proponent of artificial intelligence and has compared it to the internet or mobile phones in terms of its revolutionary potential.
In a blog named "The Period of artificial intelligence has started" which was distributed and dated Walk 21, a day before the open letter, he said he accepts man-made intelligence ought to be utilized to assist with diminishing a portion of the world's most terrible imbalances.
