Microsoft builds the largest AI model for detecting cancer

On Thursday, Microsoft and Paige, a digital pathology provider, announced a collaboration to create the world's most considerable image-based artificial intelligence (AI) model for cancer diagnosis.

The model will be trained on up to four million digitized microscope slides from Paige's unparalleled petabyte-scale clinical data library. Paige will train the system at scale on Microsoft's superior supercomputing infrastructure before deploying it to hospitals and laboratories worldwide via Azure.

Paige is working with Microsoft to create a new AI model with billions of parameters that are orders of magnitude greater than any other image-based AI model currently in use. According to Paige, this model helps to capture the subtle nuances of cancer and serves as the foundation for the next generation of clinical applications and computational biomarkers that push the frontiers of oncology and pathology.

"Paige has been at the forefront of innovation since its inception, and we strongly believe that by combining Microsoft's expertise and enormous compute power with Paige's deep expertise in AI, technology, and digital pathology, we will significantly advance the state-of-the-art in cancer imaging." "By developing this model, we will help improve the lives of the millions of people affected by cancer every day," said Razik Yousfi, Paige's SVP of Technology.

The model is scheduled to be finished in 2024. Once implemented, it might assist pathologists in making more accurate and efficient cancer diagnoses, perhaps leading to earlier diagnosis and treatment for patients.

AI In Healthcare

Microsoft and Paige's collaboration is one of several recent projects to employ AI to better cancer diagnosis. Google said in July that it was working on an AI model to identify skin cancer from photos of moles. In February, IBM Watson Health released an AI-powered tool to assist clinicians in diagnosing breast cancer.

These projects are part of a rising trend of employing artificial intelligence to enhance healthcare. Artificial intelligence is used to create new pharmaceuticals, personalize treatments, and even provide remote medical care. As AI technology advances, it is expected to play an increasingly vital role in the battle against cancer.
