China is on its way to becoming the first global superpower for Artificial Intelligence. The global recruitment group Hays recently released the 2021 report "The Inside Story of Technology in China", which states that China is leading the global AI industry with over 60% of big data experts currently working in China. With more emerging industry segments and sectors, however, there is now a gap between the supply and demand for talent. In fields enabled by AI technologies especially AI in the healthcare sector, the talent competition has grown fierce.
It also found that technical roles account for over 90% of job positions with an annual salary higher than one million RMB (about US$155,000).
According to Statista, in 2019, around 31.6% of the artificial intelligence talent demand in China came from Beijing. Most of the IT-related talent demands were from Beijing, the hub of innovation in China.
According to a recent report, AI graduates are now the most sought-after group among China's tech companies as the central government continues to push its human capital to prepare for a knowledge-based, tech-driven economy. Among all AI professionals, the demand for image recognition engineers grew 111% since last year. This was followed by demand within medical R&D and the gaming industry with 88 and 84 percent year-on-year growth, respectively.
A powerful exascale supercomputer in China has made a massive increase in its artificial intelligence performance, according to a new study that says more advanced machines are being developed to meet the demand for greater computing power.
China has one of the world's largest internet markets with around 800 million connected users and many internet companies. Often when non-AI technology companies grow to a certain size, they need to explore AI to upgrade and scale. The country plans to craft legislative frameworks in the AI, cybersecurity, and data privacy space within the next five years, according to local media.
