Artificial intelligence has come a long way from being just a component of science function stories to reality. Currently, we have a host of intelligent machines like self-driving cars, smart virtual assistants, chatbots, and surgical robots, to name a few. Artificial intelligence has now become more mainstream with the ongoing industrial revolution. As our society is growing more dependent on technology, top technologies like AI and machine learning have been augmenting human capabilities and disrupting decades of old and traditional lifestyles. With the emergence of algorithm-driven artificial intelligence, the usefulness of AI continues to grow. Experts predicted that networked artificial intelligence will amplify human effectiveness but can also threaten human autonomy, agency, and capabilities. Some even say that advanced AI robots and systems will effectively debate humans on crucial societal topics and will be capable of thinking and asking questions that have never been asked before.
AI scientists speak about the wide-ranging possibilities that computers might match or even exceed human intelligence and capabilities on tasks such as complex decision-making, reasoning, and learning, sophisticated analytics and pattern recognition, and such others. Several experts also focus on the optimistic remarks on healthcare and other possible applications of AI in diagnosing patients and treating patients or helping senior citizens live fuller and healthier lives. Additionally, a number of these experts predicted that AI would also support long-anticipated changes in formal and informal education systems. But what happens if the advanced capabilities of AI exceed human capabilities? Let's five more into understanding the capabilities and differences between AI and human intelligence.
While human intelligence aims to adopt new environments by utilizing a combination of different cognitive processes, AI focuses on developing machines that can mimic human behavior and perform human-like actions. Besides, human intelligence is all about learning from various incidents and past experiences. Physical intelligence is all about learning through the trial and error method, whereas, machine intelligence depends on continuous training to perform specific tasks. But no matter how much training they gain, traditionally these machines were unable to achieve the thought process which is unique to humans.
The advanced human factor of artificial intelligence has granted complex machines the capability to outperform humans in some aspects. Recently, innovative tech enthusiasts are designing and training such AI systems that can accurately mimic human thoughts and behaviors. But they cannot make rational decisions like humans do, so technically, it's still a long way to go for machines to achieve accuracy in accurately mimicking human decision-making.
Humans possess the unique ability to learn and apply their acquitted knowledge in combination with reasoning, ethics, and understanding. Real-world scenarios require a more holistic, logical, and rational approach that is specific to humans, and might be impossible for machines to achieve so easily.
Tech giant companies and leaders have innovated new AI systems that can engage with humans in debates. Back in 2021, tech giant IBM launched an autonomous system that can engage in complex debate with humans over issues ranging from subsidizing preschool and the different engagements of space exploration, and such other issues. Project Debater is the first of its kind. The system is capable of listening to the moderators and opponents calmly and will respond accordingly. Traditionally in debates, individuals involved tend to find citations from previous research or quote or other well-known references that would be notable for the argument, but this IBM system can scan the internet within a matter of few seconds and uses the information in ways that are convincing and will enable the machine to win the debate against humans.
Now, the question arises, will such AI machines be capable enough to think or scan such questions that were previously unthinkable or unasked by the human race? Some experts believe that it can, and others believe that AI systems still have a long way to go before they will be capable of thinking and utilizing something that was unheard or unthought by the humans who created artificial intelligence. With such machines that can debate humans with such accuracy and efficiency, it will not be too late to accept the fact that such machines are not too far away. It is even possible that such AI machines will change the opponents' mindsets and opinions and force them to think outside the box.
