CT scans, the most trusted computerized tomography scan for the detection of complex bone fractures, tumors, and joints, are now proving inadequate in detecting COVID-19 in chest X-rays.
Notably, COVID-19 victims are likely to suffer from unexplained and indecipherable complications. Reportedly, these complications mostly get amplified in patients with a chest problem. Observations are that CT scans are failing to be accurate in the detection of such problems.
The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), center for AI and Robotics has declared their development of ATMAN AI. The new technology is aimed at detecting COVID-19 complications for RT-PCR positive patients, with 5C network and HCG academics as the collaborators. ATMAN AI is also addressed as the digital version of CT scan.
ATMAN AI, as the name suggests, runs on an AI algorithm. Radiologists operating on the 5C network will be using it with the support of HCG academics in India. The new development promises to curb the overwhelming pressure on CT scans. The ultimate objective is to make COVID-19 diagnosis ubiquitous. This means that COVID-19 diagnosis will also be available to small towns, suburban areas, outskirts, and rural areas.
To quote Kalyan Sivasailam, "Utilizing the algorithms for chest X-ray is an effective triaging tool which can be accessible to the common man in remotest districts of this country. This will have a significant impact on timely care and appropriate treatment."
DRDO also disgorges ATMAN AI's progress hitherto. It has successfully shown the accuracy of 96.73% in RT-PCR positive patients.
Dr. U.K. Singh functioning as the Director of DRDO, expresses his optimism on the integration of ATMAN AI in medical infrastructures, saying that not only the patients from rural areas but also clinicians and medical professionals will be benefitted.
The many discourses on the development of the backward areas, which is also inclusive of the rural and the small towns involve enhancing medical facilities also. Precisely, intellectuals treat medical infrastructure development as the primary development.
It is a fact well-known that small towns and rural areas are deprived of unsatisfactory and underdeveloped medical infrastructure. India Today reports the surge in the registration of around 300 COVID cases in rural areas of Eastern Madhya Pradesh. Most deaths are caused by poor treatment systems and the unavailability of adequate care for the patients. Rural Maharashtra too has been hit the worst along with certain areas of Rajasthan.
Profusely concerned, the central and the state governments are venturing into seeking the most effective solutions to COVID-19 from advancing into rural areas which remained unaffected in the first wave of COVID-19 in 2020. The government deems ATMAN AI as one of the most effective techniques that can be a savior for the rural population.
Total funding of $7.1 million has been raised for ATMAN AI. DRDO opines that the AI-powered ATMAN AI technology is a new glimmer of hope for the medical and health infrastructure that is expected to be accurate and swift in report deliveries in the wake of the pandemic. ATMAN AI is known to automatically detect radiological findings in seconds.
