The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Hyderabad has granted colleges permission to increase or decrease the number of students enrolled in a particular course, so the number of seats in core engineering courses like mechanical, electrical, and civil is likely to decrease even more in the upcoming academic year. These seats will be filled by new students enrolled in developing technology programs including data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and many others.
In contrast, the number of seats in the FEE and ECE branches decreased by 1,440 and 2,130 seats along with the number of seats in civil engineering decreased by 1,170 seats. In 2021, new seats in emerging tech courses totaled 7,000 to 8,000.
M. Manzoor Hussain claimed that practically all universities had applied for authorization to slash the number of seats in ECE, civil, mechanical, and EEE, among other programs. However, we haven't given the go-ahead to close any courses this year, he added. He added that there won't be enough seats for the lateral entry of students who enroll in the second year of B Tech if core courses are entirely discontinued by schools.
Management and academics claimed that due to the high demand for emerging technology courses, several universities are adding seats.
KVA Rao stated, "Even though we are aware of the importance of all engineering degrees, there is currently a frenzied rush for computer-related courses. Consequently, we are all adding seats to these courses". "We were successful in persuading NOCs to add seats to programs in developing technology, but only within specified constraints. JNTUH has set a cap on the total number of extra seats at 120", he added.
In the upcoming academic year, these courses will have at least 30 places available in all colleges that now offer them, he said. He indicated that the academic year was tied. V Balakrishna Reddy claimed that students seek courses in CS and related fields. He noted that there is a severe disparity between core subjects and computer-related courses in the state and stated, "Seats are being increased in these courses to pay in on-demand."
The colleges submitted an application to the All India Council for Technical Education in April of this year asking for permission to decrease the number of seats in core engineering disciplines. After universities file NOC from the institution and the state government, it will be finalized.
