What you need to know about artificial intelligence and ChatGPT in aspirational India

Everyone has a different perspective on Chat-GPT and artificial intelligence. Engineers and entrepreneurs see artificial intelligence and ChatGPT as a new frontier: a daring new world in which to create products, services, and solutions. Social scientists and journalists are concerned about the consequences for society, politics, economics, and general well-being. In this article, we have explained a few things that you need to know about AI and ChatGPT in India.

If you Google "What is ChatGPT?" you will find the following results: Chat GPT is a technology that indexes words, phrases, and sentences using statistics, reinforcement learning, and supervised learning. While it lacks true "intelligence", it can effectively answer questions, write articles, summarise information, and perform other tasks. Chat-GPT-like products have been "trained" to mimic writing styles, avoid specific types of conversations, and learn from your questions. It's not a novel concept. However, the level of performance in GPT-3.5 far exceeds that.

It also has a variety of other capabilities. It can answer historical questions, such as who was president of the United States in 1856, and it can write code. Satya Nadella believes that 80% of the code will be generated automatically. ChatGPT-like applications can generate news articles, information summaries, and other content.

The GPT-3 system has been trained using the internet and highly validated data sets, so it can answer almost any question. However, the Internet is a suspect source because "the internet" is a mash-up of marketing, self-promotion, news, and opinion. Some senior AI engineers believe Chat-GPT will be biased simply due to the amount of data it consumes.

Its competitor Google is building products with ethics inbuilt for example: "do not give financial advice", "do not discuss race or discriminate" and "do not give medical advice". According to one expert, ChatGPT has hundreds of business applications, including recruiting, onboarding, sales training, manufacturing training, compliance training, leadership development, and even personal and professional coaching. This technology is now comparable to the early days of "mobile computing." We used to think of mobile devices as an "add-on" capability to our corporate systems.

Then it expanded, matured, and grew. Today, most digital systems are built with mobile in mind; entire tech stacks are built around mobile, and we study behavior, markets, and consumers through their phones. Let us now look at the threat points. Many jobs will be altered. Chat-GPT will have an immediate impact on jobs such as editors, reporters, analysts, customer service agents, QA engineers, and so on. Approximately 8% (800,000) of the 10.3 million open jobs will be impacted immediately. Some people are already worried about the misapplication of ChatGPT in education and skill development. Some people believe that chatbots will eventually replace programming jobs in the Indian IT industry. It is still early days, but the threat looms, and there is an inherent opportunity to master the technology and use it effectively.

However, there is a serious threat looming over another horizon, aspirational India — as well as an opportunity. These are the final 12-14 months before the general elections scheduled in some key states in 2024. We have already seen that India stands out as a bright spot in an otherwise bleak global economic world. Aspirational India, which has risen since the 1991 liberalization under PV Narasimha Rao and has seen growth in the mid-2000s, faced a global recession from 2009 to 2011 and recovered from the double whammy of Covid and the much-needed GST regime consolidation. As we begin to recover, we may see politics eclipsing the economic gains made.

In the near future, we may also see security issues that call India's story into question. The neighbors have their own internal issues, but they are not afraid of conflict. As we have seen in recent attacks on the incumbent party by a biased piece of journalism that challenges Indian institutions and some targeted financial houses to again tarnish financial systems suggesting crony capitalism, India's story may be challenged and tarnished in the international arena. Aspirational India, which has created startup environments, a tech and services economy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, will be the hardest hit. Recessionary trends or downward spirals in indices, as well as uncertainty among domestic and foreign investors, will have an impact on jobs and growth.
