Are Humans Losing their Significance Due to the Adoption of AI?

Aishwarya Banik

AI is needed to improve our today, but human skills are required to improve AI for improving our tomorrow

AI plays a significant role in people's lives. Many believe AI will take over humans in the coming years. Machines can perform every complex task instantly and even better than humans. Many big companies are adopting AI tools for better performance. However better it gets, AI is still not self-sufficient. Artificial intelligence is the creation of humans itself. If a scientist can create them then they can even destroy them. Both human beings and machines are interdependent. When both humans and machines come together, they are bound to succeed. Machines need humans for building and programming them while humans need AI as a support system to perform complex tasks.

Let's look at why AI is useless without humans:

AI lacks in creativity

AI is not best suited for creative works. Though AI can help in designing and creating something, it is humans who have to use their brains to think creatively, plan out strategies, and make important decisions. AI can be a support system to humans but cannot run an entire organization without human aid. AI can never acquire the abilities of the human brain. Any job that requires creative thinking and creative problem solving cannot be done by AI.

AI needs humans to transfer knowledge

Artificial intelligence cannot run without humans. They need humans to program and charge them properly. Humans transfer knowledge to train machines according to which machines work. Machines require generalization. This means providing proper answers to the questions in which they are trained because transfer learning is transferring knowledge. With time, as technology is advancing, humans are coming out with a better version of AI according to their needs. Humans update them or can replace them anytime they want to depend on their needs. AI requires engineers to test the system, it requires rigorous troubleshooting and follows up to make sure the system is continuing to work what it is supposed to.

Providing governance

Robots are not self-sufficient. Unlike human workers, they do not have any timetable to work. They need to be updated or changed with the requirement. Human intervention is needed to map out how machines work together. Robots cannot perform every task unless they are programmed for it. For example, if someone changes the system password, robots may not be able to complete the authentication process as result they are not able to perform tasks. No one may notice this for days and weeks. So, the tasks performed by AI need to be carefully monitored by humans. Data collection, annotation, and validation by people help to improve the performance of AI. AI requires human assistance during malfunctions or breakdown and also ensure backup during this time.

AI cannot analyze data

While AI is widely used for data collection by big companies. However, deciding which data is important and which is required to be included requires human intelligence and the selection process. Getting high-quality data from widespread information is still a major challenge for AI. AI tools cannot analyze data as it is done by humans. For example, in translation applications, voice recognition tools need to learn various words, languages, accents, and dialects to benefit a large mass of humans. If more and more words will be unknown to them then it might confuse the algorithm resulting in improper translations.

AI cannot build good connections

Business is all about building a connection with other organizations and customers. Machines or robots cannot establish human-to-human trust and connection to get people relaxed, discuss something and open up. Machines help in technical stuff or calculation enormous sums but lack human intimacy. Machines and robots lack empathy, communication skills, common sense, strategic thinking, and decision-making abilities like humans possess. AI is far from predicting human preference. AI requires good business analysts to get an idea about customers' requirements. There are various traditional needs of business for effective communicators, marketers, salesforces, financial experts who lead and operate a company.

Social media platforms use algorithms and engine trackers to track the behavior and provide additional content to the customers according to their tastes. According to a report published by 'Social Media Today,' these algorithms proved to be very ineffective as they helped to instigate political divisions favoring divisive content for engagement. A report by 'Times Magazine' claimed it to be a conspiracy theory to get a new audience. Many new companies are employing human workers for this reason. For example, Facebook hired a team of editors to look after stories on its platform to restore its publication to a trusted information source. Other tech and entertainment industries have started including the human element in their content curation system.

AI will always require human input and expertise to operate to its full potential. For example, Google assistance relies on human input to improve its understanding of voice conversation and recognition. Another basic example is the phenomenon of autocorrect in our phones. We all know it gives input to every word we write. Is it always, correct? No, it is not. It requires human understanding to decide which words to choose. Human assistance in AI is required to automate tasks, bring us computation and prediction, eliminate repetitions, etc.
