AI Is The New Age Solution To Fight Against Climate Change

Apoorva Komarraju

To help humans undo their actions against the Earth's environment, AI will help us do the deed.

Climate change is our planet's greatest challenge and AI can help us fight against the rising global temperatures. The United Nations has already warned us that 2021 is the final chance for us to make a substantial difference in the fight against global warming. The UN organization is hosting the CPO26 climate summit to address this pressing concern. Industry giants like Hitachi and BCG are the partners for this endeavor and along with Climate AI champions, these companies can innovate and provide the right solutions.

The Climate Change Crisis Is Real

Finding quick and cost-effective solutions is key in order for every country to do its bit and AI can play a major role. Globally, Artificial Intelligence is helping officials fight hazards like wildfires, mitigating environmental risks in vulnerable spots, enabling drone surveillance monitoring, and other efforts to make our planet more liveable for years to come.

AI will be the core enabler for all the efforts. There are several benefits to using Artificial Intelligence in addressing this challenge. Firstly, AI can help in reducing CO2 emissions and leverage huge amounts of data to help understand the cause and effect. The energy sector can use Artificial Intelligence for good to reduce its emissions and reduce the use of fossil fuel through predictive maintenance. In the transportation industry, AI solutions can predict traffic more accurately to optimize commercial transportation.

AI For Zero Waste

Waste reduction is an area where AI can show its true power for this challenge. Greyparrot is an "AI startup that uses AI-powered computer vision software to increase transparency and automation in recycling." This startup recently raised 1.85 million pounds in a seed funding round to aid recycling with waste recognition software. To stop water wastage, a startup called WINT is using AI to detect and stop leaks at the source. The technology alerts the person when water is leaking and automatically shuts it off. Intelligence real-time monitoring identifies sources of leaks and waste to reduce your water consumption and prevent damage. All these startups use advanced predictive analytics and dynamic monitoring systems to reduce waste.

Environmental Intelligence And Artificial Intelligence

AI can help with better climate predictions. This disruptive technology has helped researchers gain 89% to 99% accuracy in detecting tropical cyclones, weather fronts, and atmospheric rivers. Environmental intelligence has become a significant part of climate trend prediction. AI and deep learning have the capability to quickly analyze dynamic systems and stimulate them to produce accurate models that can be used by scientists for more robust decision-making.

An example of this is how Google is using machine learning to "Nowcast" precipitation in high resolution to enable almost instant prediction of weather patterns. According to The Verge, "Google's methods, by comparison, produce results in minutes because they don't try to model complex weather systems, but instead make predictions about simple radar data as a proxy for rainfall."

Not just Google, initiatives like the Ocean Data Alliance implement AI and work with a global network of cities to develop comparative Smart Ocean City Action Plans that use ocean data to fix the oceans and address global warming.

The future looks bleak unless we proactively use technology to fight the challenge. Focusing on data-driven solutions and developing them at a commercial level is a viable solution. AI has proven itself to be the missing piece that will help us fight climate change and restore the environmental integrity of our planet. With more AI innovations, we can expect more wholesome solutions. Along with AI innovations, it is crucial to educate industries and the public sector about the capabilities of AI. Companies need to start incorporating AI processing to show their efforts against climate change.
