Over the past two decades, India has evolved to become a futuristic artificial intelligence hub. The development was fast-tracked in the past five years with India witnessing a significant uptake of AI-focused innovations, placing the country at the eighth out of the top ten by AI patent families on a global level. On the other hand, India is the fourth-largest producer of AI-related scholarly papers in the world. The advantages of intelligence automation, machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, augmented reality, cybersecurity, and biometrics have increased the interest of Indians, especially, the commercial ecosystem in artificial intelligence.

Previously only considered as an area of research and study, artificial intelligence has opened the door for new venues in the 21st century. One such sector is law enforcement and policing. In the digital world, AI-based police technology is increasingly used to enforce law and order across countries. AI in policing is seen as a framework that is evaluated with the help of computers and utilized to make crucial decisions. For instance, face recognition technology is widely implemented across industry verticals to maintain security. AI predictive policing anticipates where crimes will occur, who will commit them, and what type of crime will take place. On the other hand, robots are also replacing police officers to handle tasks ranging from mundane to most dangerous.

While AI in policing and law enforcement is highly customized to particular tasks, the Analytics Insight survey reveals the willingness of Indians in accepting AI cops. The survey highlights the following key findings:

  • Information Technology & Services industry is leading the acceptance of AI cops in India with over 32.7% share followed by Education at 26.5%. With a big gap, the Business sector shows acceptance at 10.2% while Banking, Finance, and Insurance stand at 8.2%.
  • A majority of people (74%) think that artificial intelligence is the best thing that has happened to mankind while 26% believe otherwise.
  • Over 32% of the total respondents have agreed that artificial intelligence is an opportunity. On the other hand, 26% of respondents have chosen AI neither as an opportunity nor as a threat.
  • Out of the 251 respondents, over 52.1% think that maybe AI Cops can end problems and obstacles faced by the police force while carrying out their functions on a day-to-day basis.
  • More than 45% of respondents have a neutral opinion on AI Cops making a difference in systemic racism. 38.8% believe that they will surely change policing while 16.3% have disagreed with this.
  • A majority of respondents (60.4%) accept that facial recognition technology can help AI cops identify criminals.
