Amazon Proteus: Augmenting simple, safe interaction between technology and people
Published on

Amazon unveiled its first fully autonomous mobile robot called Proteus.

Let's directly get into what Proteus does.

Proteus autonomously moves through facilities using advanced safety, perception, and navigation technology developed by Amazon.

The robot was built to be automatically directed to perform its work and move around employees and does not need to be confined to restricted areas.

It can operate in a manner that augments simple, safe interaction between technology and people.

Proteus is capable of lifting and transporting GoCarts, Amazon's wheeled trolleys used to move packages through facilities.

The robot will initially be deployed in the outbound GoCart handling areas in Amazon fulfillment centers and sort centers.

The aim is to automate GoCart handling throughout the network, which will help reduce the need for people to manually move heavy objects.

Amazon also is getting ready to launch the robotic work cell Cardinal, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision to read and select the right package and place it in a GoCart.

Manual scanning will soon be replaced by Amazon Robotics Identification (AR ID), an AI-powered scanning capability with computer vision and machine learning technology. The technology uses a unique camera system that runs at 120 frames per second.
