All it takes for Real-Time Deepfakes to Fail is a ’90 Degree Turn’

Real-time deepfake videos heralded as the bringers of a new age of internet uncertainty, appear to have a fundamental flaw: They can't handle side profiles. An AI software company Metaphysic, many contemporary deepfake programs simply aren't great at recreating the profile of somebody's face. There is an interesting vulnerability in video deepfakes that, to date, has been generally overlooked by the security research community, perhaps because 'live', real-time deepfakes in video calls have not been a major cause for concern until very recently.  Most of the visual content that exists out there most of the time doesn't include profile shots because it simply isn't desired.

Live real-time deepfakes in video calls:

Deepfakes' heads turn 90 degrees to either side, the otherwise photorealistic illusion falls apart. DeepFaceLive is a live-streaming version of the popular DeepFaceLab software and is capable of creating alternate video identities in real-time. A 'live' deepfake model needs the capacity to perform matting at will, and on request, to an acceptably convincing level.

Live deepfake video shares a common problem with augmented reality – the need to superimpose real hand images and other kinds of real obstruction onto a non-real image. Most 2D-based facial alignments algorithms assign only 50-60 percent of the number of landmarks from a front-on face view to a profile view. With 3D body-scanning technologies, a scammer could conceivably turn their own likeness into somebody else's.

While deepfake technologies may have made big strides in recent years. Deepfake videos have also been used to trick live facial recognition software. The research community has been deeply engaged in the development of deepfake detection technologies since the inception of the phenomenon, but is, to an extent, hindered by the fact that they cannot interact with the material that they're investigating.
