AI-powered companion robots created by researchers can alleviate the loneliness pandemic. A considerable proportion of the worldwide population, estimated at one-third, suffers from increased loneliness and social isolation, which can lead to catastrophic health implications such as mental illness, dementia, obesity, and early mortality. An increasing body of studies suggests that companion robots can help alleviate stress and loneliness, particularly among the elderly, while also boosting their health and activity levels in their homes.
When compared to previous models, the current generation of companion robots, which are equipped with superior AI programmes, can form better social bonds with people. These AI robots are capable of participating in spontaneous conversations and even emulating the voices of departed loved ones by employing generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT, generating a feeling of familiarity and emotional connection.
Professor of Psychological Medicine at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, Elizabeth Broadbent, emphasised the potential of AI to improve companion robots' social abilities. She did, however, emphasise the significance of including ethical and trustworthy guidelines in their programming. To address this, researchers from the Universities of Auckland, Duke, and Cornell released a report in Science Robotics outlining ethical concerns and asking stakeholders to set norms for trust, agency, involvement, and real-world efficacy.
The study also suggests a new way to assess the usefulness of companion robots in delivering help. It also quotes a poll of 307 care professionals from Europe and the United States, which found that 69% of doctors felt that social robots may give companionship, ease loneliness, and potentially enhance patients' mental health. Furthermore, 70% of doctors agreed that insurance companies should pay for companion robots if they show to be successful friendship supplements. However, knowing how to precisely assess the impact of these robots remains a difficulty.
According to experts, given acceptable ethical constraints, robots can help create a healthier society. While companion robots are not designed to replace true human friendship, they are useful tools for improving well-being and assisting persons who feel lonely. As research in this sector progresses, companion robots coupled with AI have the potential to considerably contribute to reducing the loneliness pandemic while emphasizing the need of preserving genuine human interactions.
