Adobe is Using Artificial Intelligence to “Uncrop” Pictures!

Adobe is using artificial intelligence to recreate what's missing through a prototype tool

Before digital editing, extending the borders of a photo was virtually difficult, and it still poses a time-consuming problem for even Photoshop gurus. However, a new tool by Adobe may make "uncropping" photographs simple. Adobe is using the artificial intelligence which highly relies on automatically rebuilding missing parts of the photo.

The Adobe Max "Sneaks" event features some of the cutting-edge work that the company's researchers have been working on over the previous year, and for an hour and a half, a well-known celebrity applauds the numerous on-stage demos. Project All of Me, a new tool that Qing Liu unveiled this year, largely depends on artificial intelligence to automatically reconstruct missing areas of a photo, enabling an image to be uncropped and expanded on either side with little to no useful work. New functions coming to its various products, such as Photoshop's ability to quickly remove an ex from a picture.

The tool analyses an image and creates a layout map first. For the demonstration, this was a knee-cropped photograph of a person standing in front of a grassy field. The image was automatically dissected into its parts, including the person's clothing, hair, face, and the bag they were holding. The photo's frame was widened in all directions, and the AI was able to rebuild the subject's legs and feet as well as a portion of the sidewalk they may or may not have been standing on when the shot was first taken by using the layout map.

Liu then uses Project All of Me to automatically remove the subject's bag, reconstruct the parts of their body it had blocked, lengthen the dress they are wearing, and even alter the color and pattern of the dress' fabric—tasks that Photoshop is very much capable of performing, but not with just a single click as shown here.

Although it's unknown whether or when Project All of Me will appear in upcoming versions of Lightroom or Photoshop, many of those apps' most potent AI-powered tools originated as research demonstrations like this one. A simple uncropping tool would unquestionably be an appealing addition to the feature sets of both apps
